I discovered a new thriller/genre bender by a writer named Michael Gruber called Night of the Jaguar. Very good, very Floridian (I am a refugee from the Sunshine Coast and sometimes get nostalgic). I have sent UO off to procure the first two books in the series, about a black Cuban line cook-ex-detective named Jimmy Paz who has to come to terms with his links to Santeria while remaining firmly planted in this world. Can his materialist neuro-psychiatrist wife handle his growing obsession? Does he fall for ex-flame Beth Morgensen, a sociologist studying prostitutes (or "girls who kiss boys for money," as described to the Paz's 7 y.o. daughter)? Is a giant mutant-but-clumsy ninja Cat God killing prominent Miami Cuban businessmen who might have ties to drugeros from Cali? All that and more... Damn good supernatural thriller. Confound the corporatist publishing industry that doesn't trust niche-bending stories and buy the damn book!
