Our experience is that if you don't fill up that dog-spot with a dog of your choice, a rescue will turn up.

I've had seven dogs of my own in my adult life, and I only actively acquired one. The others were all if-you-don't-take-him/her-he/she-will-go-to-the-pound-and-be-killed-in-three-days. I can't say I've regretted taking in any of the strays. Rescues know their whole life that they've been rescued, and they never stop being grateful. Plus they are always still dogs, which are( to paraphrase UO) furry bundles of trust.

My husband is very anxious now, because our town has a four dog limit, and we only have three dogs.
