Delaying Gratification

Well, we didn't get Darcy.

We would have -- we liked her -- she's had a rotten time and needs lots of love and attention, and she liked us and Kate too -- but she had bonded with another dog at the shelter, and he needed a companion dog in his new home, so Darcy was it.  She'll have a good home, and that's all that matters.

But as UO said, it's galling -- it's one thing to have lost her to people who wanted her for herself, as we did; these folks just wanted her as a freebie of sorts.

However, one depressing thing my research has turned up -- there are lots and lots of border collies out there that need rescuing.  Duh -- lots and lots of dogs, never mind BCs.  It's just the breed we know the best.  So we'll find the right one for us.  And as long as they go to good homes, I don't really care (much) how often we lose out.

Kit: The Return

Kit, the Winter White Happy-Footed House Hamster of Hyjinks, has returned!  And, intrepid me, I scooped her up and plopped her in her cage before she could boogie back under the couch, or the bookcase, or the treadmill; or any of the other myriad hyding places we have in our rec'd room. 

She disappeared sometime over the weekend -- TLO, her nominal hooman, had cleaned out her cage and/but somehow the girl scout handbook that we use to block the wiggly bits of the cage door was never replaced; and Kit, true to form, wiggled out into the big bad world and vanished.

This has happened before.  All hamster keepers know they are veritable little escape-artists, and Kit, being a Winter White (sometimes confused with a Chinese Dwarf) and therefore tiny, has figured out how to wriggle through the gaps in the bars around her cage door (on the roof of her cage; no mean feat).  I have seen her do the monkey bars thing across the roof of her cage, a thing I can't do; so yes, my kid's hamster is stronger than I am. 

Anyhoo.  I plopped her in her cage, made sure the Girl Scout handbook was firmly in place and put her on TLO's new desk.  A nice surprise when she wakes in the morning.  Or at 3 a.m. when Kit's wheel begins to spin faster than the speed of sound.

So.  It's coming up on two years for this blog and it's time for a re-design.  Thankfully TypePad provides a DC-theme skin to wrap my little bloggie in.  If you like it, hate it or are indifferent to it, let me know.

I ordered Dally's memorial stone tonight.  Pennsylvania bluestone, which should make UO happy.  Inscribed "Our Friend Dally / 1994 - 2009."  It will look like this:

I have never done this for an animal before, not even Mishou our long-lived, revenge-minded domestic short-hair cat.  But then, Dally was like no other.
