Bloggers' Challenge

Via Typepad, the Bloggers' Challenge is being run at DonorsChoose.org for the month of October.  Pick a challange, and a project within the challenge and make a contribution.  DonorsChoose does a very nice job explaining how the money will be used.  My choice is the Elizabeth Minton Autism Challenge...but they're all useful, and needful.  So open your wallets, dig out your charge cards and help some kids.

I'm SO excited!

So UO and The Littlest Offering went off the Joe the Computer God's shop in Gaithersburg today to get the desktop fixed...which they did...and they picked me up a laptop as well!! Wheeeee!! I can go back to blogging in the backyard!  So wonderful!

Kate is jealous of the laptop, by the way...she hasn't chewed on the cord yet, but that's coming of course, and she kept inserting her head under my fingers as I typed and pawing the keyboard.  Definitely annoyed that I wasn't paying attention to her. 

Some slight movement on the job front...just when I get my consultant business cards...we'll see...both possibilities are located in No. VA, which is the worst possible location from my perspective.  UO points out that Arlington has lots of good places for lunch; and this is true, but it doesn't make up for the distance or the time.  Maybe I can trade some salary for telecommuting...

Things You Can Count On

With perfect timing, the family PC has crapped out on me for the last time.  (I am writing this from Offering Boy's PC and he has indicated his displeasure, but there's nothing he can about it, since he's grounded from all screen events for not doing his homework.)  UO will take the cpu back to Joe the Computer God and hopefully by this weekend I will have laptop of my very own and can return to Blogging in the Backyard!  Whee!

While that is a lovely thing to look forward to, there's a hard drive with all my documents, pix, plus my consulting work, I need to retrieve...that's really UO's mission on Friday, to enlist Joe to download the HD so I can Move On to my next wireless relationship.

So.  Send all your positive computing thoughts our way and hopefully, sooner rather than later, I will be Portable and Free!  Free!  Free!

Don't Try This at Home

Over on the NewsHour, Andrew Keen discusses his new book, The Cult of the Amateur: How Today's Internet is Killing Our Culture.  It's provocative and polemical, and asks the question relevant to all us "slice-of-life" bloggers: does the modern world need to know what I ate for breakfast? 

Well, yes, it does.  Why do you ask?

Actually I agree with much of what Keen has to say, certainly in terms of information credibility, what Keen calls "high quality" information, which we're replacing with user-generated content.  Like this blog.  Hmm.  Well, at least you get pix of cute doggies and kids.  Sometimes.
