My elderly mother had a medical set-back recently, so I've slept over at her house several nights last month. I stayed in my youngest sister's room, which she was allowed to decorate by herself at age nine. It has green shag carpet chosen because it looked like grass (lawn, not the other stuff.) The wallpaper is royal blue with white and yellow daisies. The furniture was all painted green (possibly by my nine year old sister) to match the stems on the daisies. And the whole look is completed by posters of orangutans, and black-light posters of flying horses and castles. So be grateful for boa feathered lamps, especially pretty and tasteful ones.

Oh, believe me, I am. When I was sixteen, we moved into our first "real" house in the States ("real" being one that we'd had built and could decorate ourselves). My mother let me pick out the fittings for my bathroom...brown and yellow jungle pattern on a white ground, with brown sink surround and yellow bottom cabinets with silver metalwork. I cringe to think about it now, but she was very tolerant to let me do it. I'm sure it took $5K off the eventual sale price.
